Book Review - The Tramp by Sarah Wathen

Book Reviews

The Tramp

(The Bound Chronicles Book 1)

 by Sarah Wathen – Review

Sarah Wathen’s novel The Tramp introduces the strange town of Buffalo Square through the eyes of misguided tourists. When the façade of quaintness quickly wears off, the family soon notices it seems deserted except for fleeting moments with a local resident. The characters fade from the narrative and the black eyes of a red-headed high school Irish girl, Candy Vale, become the center of a strange family history in out of the way Shirley County. Candy is reunited with a childhood friend, John Robinson, and together they unravel the secrets of the town’s inhabitants through mysterious motifs, intriguing old photographs, an ominous tarot reading, and the mythical waters of a Blue Spring.
The “realness” of Wathen’s teenage characters is portrayed through their hormonal territorial nature with each other and the bluntness of their language and conversations. Sam Castle is the defiant rebel with the flirtatious charm; John Robinson is the new kid on the block who is the protector of Candy, and Amanda is the brash vixen who goes after what she wants. Their curious nature reminds the reader of the vibrant emotions of youth and its secrets amidst rivalry and foreboding when an innocent Homecoming celebration goes awry on a railroad track with an unexplained death. As old wounds resurface for Candy triggered by tragedy, John is able to save her for the second time in her life.
Ancestral ties, strange dreams, and strong bonds forge the foundation of this novel. It peels back the layers of its characters chapter by chapter with all the red herrings necessary for suspense to move to an eventful epilogue.

Book Description

At first glance, Candy was a pretty little seven year old girl like any other in Shirley County. She was prone to singing and dancing and splashing in the rain, in her yellow polkadot bikini and her favorite red galoshes. John was a normal little boy and he loved playing with his best friend, Candy. But their bond drew a darkness that had long stayed hidden in a small, southern mountain town.
Sometimes the truth is in the things you can’t see. Something happened all those many years ago, and it can never be forgotten. But our story begins long after that, when Candy and John are teenagers. John, caught up in the business of life, stops spending his summers in Shirley County. And Candy, hurt and lonely at first, moves on as well. She meets Sam, the new boy in town.
Even though she has never ventured more than a hundred miles from her home, she has never felt at ease there. Always at odds with her high school friends, her church, her family—and bored with her small town existence—she finds the adventure she needs in Sam. He is cool, confident, independent, and Candy likes that. He lives on the fringes of society, and perhaps she likes that, too. But even with Sam in her life, she is sometimes overcome with a sense of dread, like a shadow has passed, just on the edge of vision. And sometimes the truth is in the things you won’t see. Something was awakened all those many years ago, that can never be undone.
When John finally does find his way back, it’s to a Shirley County that is much more disturbing than he remembers. He’s accosted by strange dreams and preoccupied with his grandfather’s visions—the evidence scrawled so frantically that the paper is ragged and torn. Howling animal masks and flailing human figures. Teeth sharp as razors. Wherever John tries to find reason in the madness, he’s blocked by evasion and dead ends. He doesn’t miss his old friend Candy’s new secrets, either. And John’s once comforting presence becomes unwelcome, when he uses the brilliant mind Candy has always trusted to turn up troubling information on Sam’s past.
Despite the confusion of strained friendships, new romance, and high school intrigues, John and Candy begin to suspect something more sinister lurking amidst the days of football glory and the nights of clandestine rendezvous. And then there is a murder. Sometimes the truth is in what you must see to survive.

AboutTheAuthor
An artist turned author, Sarah Wathen is a storyteller by trade and a painter at heart. She was trained in Classical Painting at the University of Central Florida, then completed graduate studies in Fine Art at Parson’s School of Design in New York City. Her first step into the world of independent publishing was as an illustrator, and Sarah quickly realized she wanted to write her own books rather than illustrate other’s. That reinvention came as no surprise to family and friends, who remember her as a child always ready to turn a tale. Hours spent under the backyard stairs with her sister—dreaming up imaginary friends with outlandish names like Afisha and Pekins, and designing social networks called the Plant Club and the Tutu Group—were recorded and illustrated, too. Copies still exist under lock and key! Sarah currently resides in Florida and runs the indie label, LayerCake Productions.

Unusual Story About the Author

This will probably sound weird, but I have to wear a ring on every finger when I type my second draft of a manuscript. It started out as a private joke—I was writing about high school and I used to wear a lot of silver rings when I was in high school myself—but now it’s a superstition that I can’t shake. I always write the first draft by hand, then the rings come out when I transfer it onto my Mac. I call it “The Coronation,” but I don’t think I’ve ever said that outside my head until now!

The Hartford Inheritance by Jane A. Hobden

Book Description

Intense, gripping, psychological thriller.

As a child, Kitty Harmer had her world turned upside down when her twin sister, Sarah, was taken
into care. Now aged 26 and struggling, she is contacted about the inheritance of a property she has
never heard of miles away. Kitty seizes the opportunity and moves into Belford Hall, set on acres of
land in Norfolk.

Kitty is soon drawn to the charms of the Norfolk countryside, and a local farmer. As she settles into
the primitive manor house, she discovers a book titled Hartford Place locked in a library drawer. Kitty soon learns of the stories surrounding the Hall, a curse made in the 1800s and a past she knew
nothing about. Her Hartford ancestors mirror Kitty with their raven hair and emerald eyes and have all suffered tragedy, with veiled secrets buried deep.

When the twins reunite, Sarah reveals a hardship that unsettles Kitty’s memories of her own childhood. Is there a curse on the Hartford family? Is there a ghostly presence at the Hall? This thriller takes Kitty on a journey through a past that emulates her future. With twists and turns through history and the present, you will be swept into the Hartford Inheritance and the passionate jealousy that shadows the identical twins through the generations.

About the Author

Since I was a child, I have enjoyed literature and would spend countless hours after school tucked
away in my bedroom reading and composing stories.  My daughter, who is 11 years old, does exactly
same. She adores the process of story-telling and when we discussed what she wanted to be, she
said without any hesitation an Author. It melted my heart. It’s where my passion has always been.  It’ hard to believe that after starting the process of writing my debut novel in 2011, I have finally
published.  I hope very much that you enjoy my writing and I intend to follow The Hartford

Inheritance with a prequel and a sequel.I live in the South East Coast of England, where I have always lived and  which I adore. I’ve been married for 12 years now to a man who inspires me and with whom I am still very much in love. We have two children together, Harriet, now aged 11 years, and Toby, aged 6 years. My parents are my rocks and have taught me all my best qualities – to be fair and kind to everyone. They have always been there for me and they are very proud of me for achieving my goal of publishing my first book. This book is dedicated to all of my family, whom I love so very much.

A Disturbance in Time? By Ron Jayes - Trailer # 21

Book of the Day

A Disturbance in Time?
by Ron Jayes

Book Description

In this disturbing, exhilarating debut novel, three apparently unconnected events and places are all mysteriously bound up across time and space…

In 1668, in an isolated community in the wilds of Exmoor, a poor peasant family is terrorized by a crazed witchfinder. More than three-hundred years later, the crew of HMS Leopard welcome on board two distraught young girls, the survivors of a shipwreck off the coast of East Africa.

And at the beginning of the new millennium three geeky lads build an experimental computer and end up with much more than they bargained for.

Part fantasy, part thriller, this is a powerful novel that asks profound questions about the nature of destiny and responsibility, power and love.

About The Author

Ron Jayes was born and raised in Leicester. His varied career includes engineering, engraving and photography, but his love has always been writing. A few years ago he had to accept part time work and then early retirement, due to ataxia, a progressive illness that affects co-ordination and balance. He used this new-found freedom to write. Book of the Day

Looks can be deceiving. Taliesin Weaver looks like a normal teenager who plays soccer and sings in a garage band. He is that teenager…but he can also remember all of his previous lives, including one as Taliesin, King Arthur’s bard. Not only that, but he can use the abilities of all of those previous lives, including the original Taliesin’s ability to work magic.
Unfortunately, someone else in his town knows who Tal really is and wants to kill him because of something that happened in one of those past lives. Tal might be able to fight back, if only he knew who was out to get him. He has no way of knowing, though, and his enemy poses a bigger and bigger threat each day, not just to Tal but to family, his friends, even his entire town.
Can Tal figure out who his enemy is and how to defeat him or her in time? Perhaps not. After all…looks can be deceiving.

Getting to Know Author Nkandu Beltz

Tell Us About Yourself

I’m an author, speaker and change maker. I have been working in the not for profit sector for over 15 years, I’m a mother of three and I love food. I started out as a girl child advocate, advocating for gender equality. My background is in journalism and news writing. I love bringing out the best in people through my speaking and community projects I run.

What were you like in school? I was popular in school, I had a great time but I was also one of the kids who was always helping other kids. In college, I was still popular and loved all my subjects.

English is my third language, so that was always a challenge but I loved it, I loved literature more than I loved Media Law and Ethics when I was a student journalist.

What are your ambitions for your writing career? I want to teach, I want to inspire people to live the best life they can through stories of other people. I want everyone to unleash their brilliance and do something meaningful with their lives. I want people to perform little acts of kindness; a nice word or smile can change someone’s life. I want to encourage people to write and tell stories, story telling is very powerful and change can only begin with a single story, followed by action.

Which writers inspire you? Harper Lee has been my biggest inspiration, ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ changed my life and the way I looked at writing as a profession. Paulo Coelho with his book ‘The Alchemist’ is my all time favorite. I learn something new every time I read it. A great story and very entrepreneurial lessons, which cover all the seven areas of life (mental, financial, vocational, spiritual, social, physical, familial).

What was your life like before becoming an author? My life has always been exciting; I have always looked at the glass half full. My days were filled with speaking gigs and doing day to day family things.

Which comes first - the character's story or the idea for the novel?  The characters come out first, this builds the foundation of what the story is about. .

When did you decide to become a writer?  I think when I was in high school, I wrote for the local news paper and whilst in school I contributed to the school newsletter. I was about 16 years old when I discovered I could write and get paid for it.

Why do you write?  TO INSPIRE, UPLIFT AND ENCOURAGE OTHERS TO BECOME THEIR GREATEST POSSIBILITY.

So, what have you written?

I Have the Power-Unlocking your potential to Change the world.
The Inspirational Bible. I was one of 365 contributors from 15  countries around the world.
Live, Love and Inspire, A series of Poems collected over years.
BLOGS I write every fortnight for my blog on www.nkandubeltz.com.au/blogs I also contribute to other sites like Happiness and it’s Causes and African Mirrors.
MY BOOKS ARE ALL AVAILABLE AT AMAZON.COM AND ihavethepowerbook.com

Give me an insight into your main character. What does he/she do that is so special?  The main character is an inspiration to the world, nothing can make or break her. She is balanced, knows her values and is kind, compassionate and not afraid of anything or anyone.

What sparked the idea for your book I wanted to share my story and inspire others. When I went out and spoke with many young people, I felt a sense of disempowerment from a lot of people I was working with. I wanted each and every person to know that they have the power to make a difference, that they needed to believe in themselves and be the change they want to see in the world.

How do you market your book?  Through speaking at conferences, schools, public forums, Facebook, Twitter, and I ask my contacts via email to share with their contacts.

Do you have any advice for other authors on how to market their books? What do you do to get book reviews?  MY BOOKS ARE BEST USED AS "BUSINESS CARDs" THAT CREATE CREDIBILITY AND INTEREST IN MY TEACHINGS.  SPEAKING ENGAGEMENTS HAVE BEEN MOST SUCCESSFUL FOR ME. MY READERS PROVIDE ME WITH BOOK REVIEWS. In the first few months, I gave my book as a gift to the thought leaders and game changers and this opened up many doors for me.

What advice do you have for someone who would like to become a published writer?  Just write, nothing can stop you if you really want it

Is there anything else you would like to add that I haven’t included? Treat people with love and respect, never look down or up to please. You have the same qualities as any other person. The way you treat yourself is how others will treat you.

How can readers discover more about you and your work?   From Amazon.com or www.ihavethepowerbook.com and many online books stores; we are currently in USA, Canada, Malta, UK, Sweden, Germany and Australia.

Or you can contact me via Nkandu@nkandubeltz.com.au or through www.nkandubeltz.com.au

‘I Have The Power’ is a guide with inspiring experiences of an African child, born in a remote area in Zambia. It follows the life of Nkandu Beltz and the challenges and triumphs of being born a girl in a Southern African country. It describes the realization that she has the power to make a difference and that no one can suppress her integrity, just because she was born a girl.

This is her journey as a philanthropist and social change maker and becoming a Young Social Pioneer in her new home country, Australia, creating positive change wherever she sets foot.
The book will inspire you to strive for greatness, to unlock your potential to changing the World by doing little acts of kindness and challenging your beliefs on leadership.
This is a great book with spectacular stories for everyone to read. It is a great gift to young people who may be feeling disempowered.
